While the Packard name would continue until the 1958 model year, many historians consider 1956 to be the last year for “true” Packard production. Despite Packard’s troubled financial status, that did not stop the company from unveiling some more innovations for the 1956 model year. The automatic transmission was now controlled by an electronic push button assembly next to the steering wheel and the company’s legendary torsion bar suspension, which was previously an option, became a standard feature by summer 1956. Senior models such as the Caribbean received a new bored out V8 which displaced 374 cubic inches and was fed by twin four-barrel Rochester carburetors – a good combination for 310 horsepower! These improvements paid off in the automotive press, with many reports calling the 1956 Packard the best American car of the year. Packard’s stunning Caribbean Convertible was the last and only convertible option offered in 1956. Given body number 5699, the Caribbean Convertible was the most expensive Packard offered that year and had a base price of nearly $6,000 (the equivalent of over $55,000 today). A stylish end to a legendary car maker’s portfolio, very few Caribbean Convertibles were assembled and sold during 1956, making them one the rarest American production cars of the 1950’s. Today, examples are highly prized by collectors around the globe.
